U.S. Attorney to be formally asked to probe death of man shot by Bridgeton police

BRIDGETON -- The family of a Bridgeton man shot to death by two city police officers, along with community activists, plan Tuesday to formerly request the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey open a probe into the case.

The action comes in the wake of a Cumberland County grand jury's decision last week to not indict Bridgeton Police Officers Braheme Days and Roger Worley in the Dec. 30, 2014 killing of Jerame Reid.

Reid, 36, died after he disobeyed police orders and got out of a car during a traffic stop and was shot. The incident was captured on police car's dashcam.

"There are too many improprieties that are a concern to all," writes Walter L. Hudson, chair of  the National Awareness Alliance, in a letter that is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman at his Newark office on Tuesday.

" ...  we believe Jerame Reid's civil rights were violated. We ask for your intervention."

The grand jury's decision to not indict the two officers has angered Reid's family and many in the community. Other leaders have said the grand jury's verdict should be respected.

Hudson, along with Founder Of Peoples Organization For Progress Larry Hamm, members of the Reid family and elected officials are scheduled to appear at a press conference in Newark after delivering the letter, according to a release from Hudson's organization.

In the letter to Fishman, Hudson lists what he claims are more than a dozen improprieties in the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office's investigation of the case.

Hudson requests "a fair and impartial investigation in this matter be conducted."

On Saturday in Bridgeton Hudson and members of Reid's family held a press conference announcing their plan for call for a civil rights probe into Reid's death.
